It all started with Miles Davis. Lots of things started with Miles Davis.
Pianist/composer Chick Corea had already passed through his apprenticeship and was a recognized artist in his own right by the time he joined Miles Davis’ band in 1968.
He had played with Mongo Santamaria and Willie Bobo (1962-1963), Blue Mitchell (1964-1966), Herbie Mann, and Stan Getz. His debut as a leader came in 1966 when he recorded Tones for Joan’s Bones. He recorded the very significant Now He Sings, Now He Sobs in 1968 with bassist Miroslav Vitous (later of Weather Report) and drummer Roy Haynes.
He briefly joined Sarah Vaughan’s band, but it was the fateful inclusion in Miles Davis’ emerging electric band that launched a sub-genre of music that was later labeled “Fusion.” Herbie Hancock was still in the band and it was Miles who convinced Corea to switch to electric piano.
